For Tuesday February 7th

Posted 2/3/2017 10:17am by Natalie Kujala.

Okay, because I know everyone is on pins and needles about the conclusion of our heat (or lack thereof) saga, so brace yourselves, because I’m about to wrap this story up. Are you ready for it, okay,……WE FINALLY HAVE HEAT! Wahooo! I could do a celebratory dance all day if my coworkers would allow it, but I already know they won’t, so I’ll refrain. But after almost 2 weeks without heat in our southern PA office, I AM GRATEFUL, and I am happy!   Whew, now that that is out of the way, despite the slower growing season, our growers are still quite busy. Many are attending or presenting at conferences such as the Chesapeake Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture conference, the Mid-Atlantic Fruit and Vegetable Convention, and the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture conference. Others are updating their packing sheds and food safety plans, burying themselves in crop and field planning, or tending to their tunnels and storage crops. I guess there is never truly a slow season for farmers!

HIGHLIGHTS:

LOCAL GOLD POTATOES: We have been quite fortunate that a local PA farm, Mockingbird Hill Produce, has been supplying us with beautiful medium and large gold potatoes. How can you go wrong with potatoes? That’s right, you can’t!

GARLIC: Whether you are looking for red or purple-striped, we’ve still got it! In my mind, garlic is a great addition to just about any meal.

MIXED COLOR CARROTS: I’ve said it once, but I’m going say it again, mixed color carrots add bursts of color to any dish. Baked, raw, steamed, or stewed, carrots are certainly a delicious winter staple.

MAPLE SYRUP: As a reminder, our maple syrup supplier is hoping to move more syrup. Though we only have a couple of options listed, please let me (Natalie) know if you’re interested in a particular kind (dark, golden, amber) or pack (gallons, quarts, pints). We ask that you let us know a few days before your delivery day, so that we can give the grower enough time to pack your case! The syrup is sold only by the case (4 x 1 gallons, 12 x 1 quarts, etc).

NON-ORGANIC, ALL NATURAL LOCAL CHICKEN EGGS: AVAILABLE IN MEDIUM, LARGE AND EXTRA-LARGE, 15 DOZEN BULK.   PLEASE CALL TIM DERSTINE AT HARES VALLEY GROWERS AT 814 448 2784 FOR GREAT EGG PRICES.
