Produce List for Friday December 8th

Posted 12/5/2017 11:48am by Natalie Kujala.

As the weather cools and the craze of summer harvests become memory, many of us find ourselves with open spaces in our calendars that we once only dreamed of. These moments of free time quickly vanish as production planning, supply ordering, conferences, and root veggies take over, but those moments of downtime are not taken for granted. The staff at TOG would like to thank all of our growers for their continued hard work and long hours, and for allowing us to lend a hand in their businesses. We are also thankful for all of the delicious organic fruits and veggies we are able to enjoy because of your labors.

HIGHLIGHTS:

BURDOCK ROOT: Burdock root is a darn amazing plant, with detoxifying, purifying, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial abilities. Burdock root can be made into tea or consumed as a vegetable. I’ve been told that burdock root has an earthy, sweet crunch similar to celeriac. I think it’s high time I experiment with this impressive plant.

APPLES AND PEARS: We have had quite a successful fruit year thanks to Benjamin Peachey of Peachey’s Fruit Farm. We are now down to the end of the “fruits of his labor”. Friday will be the last of his #2 apples, and we are down to only #2 Asian pears, and limited numbers of those as well.

BABY ARUGULA: Great in salads, pastas, sandwiches, and pizzas, and delicious paired with salmon, pork, chicken, or shrimp. Baby arugula is one versatile little leaf, adding a pleasantly peppery punch to most any dish.

CITRUS: Meyer lemons and Hamlin oranges are available, but very limited for Friday. We will have more oranges and grapefruits available next week, and we should be getting in more lemons in the next couples of weeks. Please order all citrus early as it tends to sell out very quickly.

NC GREENS: Bunched lacinato kale and collards from NC are limited for Friday, though green kale is in better supply. We love that our friends at ECO are able to provide us with bunched brassicas that don’t quite agree with PA winters, but that so many of us love to have year-round.

NON-ORGANIC, ALL NATURAL LOCAL CHICKEN EGGS: AVAILABLE IN MEDIUM, LARGE AND EXTRA-LARGE, 15 DOZEN BULK. PLEASE CALL TIM DERSTINE AT HARES VALLEY GROWERS AT 814 448 2784 FOR GREAT EGG PRICES.
