Produce List for Tuesday Nov. 14th

Posted 11/10/2017 11:37am by Natalie Kujala.

Taylor writing today! The last few days, I have been drinking an endless amount of hot tea. This past Tuesday, I went to the grocery store in the evening. There were plenty of cars that had an inch of snow on them; winter is coming…Chicano Sol posted beautiful pictures of their snowy fields, on their Instagram. They are working hard to cover their fall crops still in the field. The farmers of Bending Bridge Farm told me this morning that they are working hard to do the same. My goodness, the wonderful hardwork of agriculture. I am always impressed with our growers!

NOTE: Several of you have been asking if we are hosting our customer farm tour this year. Unfortunately, due to several factors, we won’t be able to. BUT, if anyone is interested in touring one or two of our farms, please let us know as we will be happy to show you around!

HIGHLIGHTS:

ASIAN PEARS: There are so many varieties of Asian pears that it can be daunting. Our fruit grower, Peachey’s Fruit Farm, grows Olympic Giant and 20th Century Asian pears. These beauties are shaped like apples, but they have a tan, speckled colored skin. Their flavor is between butterscotch and caramel; why haven’t I purchased a case for myself? One of my friends makes a delicious pear desert, which is baked sliced pears in croissant rolls with a little brown sugar and butter. I need to make this for myself.

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR: Peachey’s Fruit Farm made a fresh batch for us! He uses his own #2 apples to make his vinegar. Recently, I have been making a salad dressing that is primarily cucumbers and apple cider vinegar. There are a few other ingredients that I am forgetting now, but I could drink this dressing by itself.

CITRUS: Citrus is here! This year we are bringing in citrus from South Tex Organics in Mission, TX. We have grapefruits, oranges, and lemons. Please let us know what we can send to you!

BABY GREENS REMINDER: We have freshly harvested baby greens coming in several days a week! As a reminder, many of our baby greens (arugula, sweet & spicy, ruby streaks mustard, pea shoots) can packed in 5lb, 8lb, or 10lb cases. Please let us know by FRIDAY AFTERNOON if you are interested in a pack that is not on our list! Bulk cases mean growers use fewer materials for packing, which means more savings for you! It is not too late for pear salad.

HEAD LETTUCE: Landisdale Farm’s fields flush with lettuce, which has enabled us to keep our lettuces prices low. We have especially high volumes of small and full-sized heads of green romaine. Are you looking for a volume (10+ cases)? Ask Natalie or Emily about pricing!

NON-ORGANIC, ALL NATURAL LOCAL CHICKEN EGGS: AVAILABLE IN MEDIUM, LARGE AND EXTRA-LARGE, 15 DOZEN BULK. PLEASE CALL TIM DERSTINE AT HARES VALLEY GROWERS AT 814 448 2784 FOR GREAT EGG PRICES.
