Produce List for Tuesday Oct. 31

Posted 10/27/2017 12:56pm by Natalie Kujala.

Taylor here today! Look at me, writing a few cover letters in a row (ooo-la-la). While I am busy focusing on my birthday, our Production Coordinator has started working with our growers to plan for the 2018 growing season. There are currently a lot of notes on her desk! Recently, I have been reading the articles in Growing For Market. They have included some articles about growers who only grow in the winter or only have winter CSA programs. Thank goodness for hoophouses!

PHONE NOTE: If you are calling in to place your order, but the order extension is busy, please press 0. This will bring your call to an available staff member who can take your order.

HIGHLIGHTS:

GOLDRUSH APPLES: These sweet, yet tart apples come from Peachey’s Fruit Farm in Mill Creek, Pennsylvania. This shipment of GoldRush apples has light blemishes. The apples are not degrading or misshapen, and they taste great! This variety can be eaten raw or baked into desert goodness. I am sure many people can say this, but I think my mom makes the best applesauce. I may have to ask her to make some for my birthday!

PEA SHOOTS: These give a great crunch to salads. Tim and Linda Derstine of Hares Valley Farm have been growing pea shoots for TOG for a while now. Salads are not the only option for pea shoots. People use this beautiful roughage for soups, addition to a baked dish, and even as pizza toppings!

CARROTS: We have a rainbow of carrot colors to offer you! Our carrots come from a few of our Amish growers in Path Valley, including Hidden Brook Farm, Sunny Ridge Farm, and Breezy Hill Farm. I plan to make spicy carrot hummus this weekend. That one extra step of baking the carrots before adding them to the hummus mixture has created a block for me recently, but not for long!

GOLD AND RED BEETS: Personally, I do not like eating beets, but I enjoy harvesting them. I have been in a few beet harvests at New Morning Farm. Next, I hope to see what you do with beets. Please share on Instagram; I need some suggestions on beet preparation!

GREENS REMINDER: We can pack baby and young arugula, and baby and young sweet & spicy in 5lb, 8lb, or 10lb cases. Please let us know by Friday afternoon if you are interested in a pack that is not on our list!

NON-ORGANIC, ALL NATURAL LOCAL CHICKEN EGGS: AVAILABLE IN MEDIUM, LARGE AND EXTRA-LARGE, 15 DOZEN BULK. PLEASE CALL TIM DERSTINE AT HARES VALLEY GROWERS AT 814 448 2784 FOR GREAT EGG PRICES.
